Volution: Promising Solution, GUI Not Quite There Yet - page 6
A Volution Overview
All in all, Caldera's Volution Messaging Server 1.0 shows a lot of promise. While I can't agree that the graphical interface is quite as simple to use as Caldera hopes, at the same time it definitely brings mail account creation into the realm of an average person with a bit of training. It would be even better if you could make separate administrative accounts with the ability to set what they're allowed to change and what they cannot, under the "Better safe than sorry" approach of letting people too close to your server's core workings.
The help system is nicely detailed, referring to the exact man pages you might want to reference (though clicking on the links to these brings up an error, not the man page in question) and programs you can run to achieve particular results. What's even more interesting is that the help system isn't a pared down web help, but instead pulls you up to the appropriate section of the full documentation. The only thing I bemoan there is that if you want further explanation, there's nowhere else to go in the documentation. That's it. In some cases, the help system could also do with a bit of simplified non-techie language, since parts of this software are supposed to be used by non-techies. If you're a small to medium-sized business that has an overburdened sysadmin or outsources your administration entirely, then Volution Messaging System 1.0 could indeed make a good investment--especially since it integrates so many different aspects of server setup that otherwise would have to be done by hand. Just don't sit down the receptionist and expect this person to be able to figure out how to use the package all on their own quite yet.
